The Clickster!

I used to always encourage my students to NEVER use those little clicky mechanical pencils. They always seemed way to detail specific for the practice of understanding general shapes and mass. Eventually i banned them all together. Well, as life goes, live and learn. I picked one up today and had a blast sketching this Demon. It's small, and was fun to do. I still stand by the idea that this pencils has little to no use in the life drawing room, but for other stuff...:)
Also, this is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE DC characters. Maybe, maybe, one day i'll get to play with him. Only time will tell.

I try to avoid them as well, but bottom line is.. you can create a masterpiece with a piece of coal or even chocolate syrup on a stick if you didnt have anything else to draw with. Once you build your skills you can use whatever your comfortable with. keep grindin'

I agree, the mechanical pencils aren't good for figure drawing. They do work well for sketches in the sketch book and drawings of small scale. Nice sketch.

Sorry Shawn, but I dont think I'll ever be able to give up my mechanical pencils :( You know how I am with crazy details and fine lines though. Last semester I used a .5 blue line to do my entire Life Drawing final. I promise not to do that for your class though *lol* I've discovered a fondness for that Sanguine Oil based pencil.

Cara, I'm not saying you should give it up. In fact, quite the opposite, it's a fun tool. But it's not a tool built for our life drawing class. I'm glad to hear you like the sanguine pencil, thats one of my faves also!

My mentor mike mikos at CCS banned them as well. I understand now why he did that. He did say however that if i was to use one, hold the base end in the middle of the palm (using the finger tips to hold) and be real loose. I did one like that of an elephant (one of my first posts) and i loved it. Great job. Cool character! Where do you teach at?

Jeremy,
I teach at Savannah College of Art and Design - Atlanta campus. I like the Elephant BTW. I think we're coming back to these pencils in a healthy way, where they can create bad habits early on.
